MaryIf you’re new to Fortnite, you may not know what all the fuss is about. Well, the hype has been building for a long time and it seems everyone knows someone who plays the game.
The game itself is free-to-play and while there are plenty of in-app purchases available, none of them are necessary for gameplay. The biggest difference between Fortnite and other Battle Royale games such as PUBG or Apex Legends lies in the fact that you can play alone or with up to 99 others. You can also choose to play solo if you want, but this is not recommended since you won’t be able to earn any items nor will you have access to the best weapons.
As you might expect, Fortnite comes with its own unique challenges. For instance, you need to think fast when you see your opponents, otherwise they’ll get the drop on you. You also need to stay alert at all times because you never know when one of your teammates might betray you so you can steal their gear and gain an advantage.
It’s easy to jump straight into the action and start playing, but before you do, take some time to familiarize yourself with how the game works so you can make the most out of it.
How to create a character
You don’t actually need to create a character; you can just log in using your Epic Games account. However, if you want to customize your appearance, this is an option you should definitely consider.
When you first sign in, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to use a pre-made character or draw your own. There’s no right or wrong answer here – both options work fine.
Once you decide which option you prefer, head over to your Character Settings page where you can change your name, hair color, skin tone, eye color, gender and outfit.
Note that the outfits you pick from now on will affect your character’s look even after you’ve logged out and back in again. If you prefer something different, then go ahead and select another outfit.
There are lots and lots of fortnite account shop from which players can get some special personalized things in order to look better in the game. With the help of these shops new players can get a look like things just like pro players. Sometimes most of the players got confused regarding this and they think that they are playing with a pro player so keep in mind.
Gameplay basics
Even though you’ll probably spend most of your time in Creative Mode (the mode in which you can build almost anything), you’ll still need to know what each button does and how to use them properly.
For example, if you click on the “!” sign next to the “/” key, you’ll be able to open your inventory. It looks similar to the Xbox controller layout, but with additional buttons added. If you press the “1” and “2” keys, you’ll get a list of crafting menu options. Pressing the “3” and “4” keys will give you the same thing.
Other commands you should already know include “Shift+F5” and “Ctrl+F5”. They’ll reload your save files and quit the game respectively.
There are two more commands that you’ll find useful. One is “Alt+C”, which lets you switch to Creative Mode.
The other is “T”, which allows you to toggle visibility. This makes the screen darken and dim the lights so players can spot each other better. If you press the “T” key again, it restores everything to normal.
The only other command you’ll need to know is “E”. It’s used to equip items, and you can also use it to remove things from your inventory. To equip something, just hold down the “E” key until you see the item you want to equip pop up. Then release the key and it’ll automatically disappear from your inventory. Alternatively, you could tap on the “E” icon in the bottom left corner of your screen.
Game modes and maps
Fortnite uses three different game modes, known as seasons. Each season lasts roughly seven months and gives you access to different maps and weapons.
Season 1 includes four maps named Dusty Divot, Lazy Links, Badwater Basin and Haunted Hills. Season 2 introduces a fifth map called Ghost Island. Season 3 has three maps named Tilted Towers, Blackrock Mountain and Shipment.
The maps are divided into various areas, which means that during matches, players tend to stick together in groups of five or six people. Once these teams start fighting, there’s usually little space for individual battles.
If you’re new to Fortnite, you’ll want to keep an eye on the map whenever you enter a match. Here, you’ll find icons that show you how many kills each team has made and how much health they have.
If the numbers seem low, you should focus your attention on the minimap and try to position yourself near the middle. This way, you’ll be able to cover more ground and help your team fight against enemies at the same time. If you need help spotting enemies, just tap the “?” symbol in the top right corner of the screen.
Another important tip is that you shouldn’t rush into fights unless you’re sure you can beat the opposing team. Don’t worry too much about losing; instead, focus on making sure your team gets enough experience points and kills so you can level up and unlock new skins.
Weapons and items
As mentioned above, Fortnite doesn’t have any real items. Instead, it uses weapons to improve your chances of winning matches.
Each weapon has different stats:
- Crit Rate – A number indicating the rate at which your shots hit their targets.
- Damage – How much damage a single shot can do.
- Range – How far away you can shoot your gun.
- Accuracy – How accurate your shots are compared to the accuracy of other players.
- Hitscan – How often your shots will miss their target completely.
- Speed – How fast your bullets travel towards your opponent.
- Durability – Defines how many bullets you can fire before needing to reload.
- Some skills and perks also come along with certain guns. These include:
- Aim Assist – Helps you aim more accurately.
- Scope – Makes your shots faster and more precise.
- Sprint – Gives you a small speed boost while sprinting.
- Explosive Charge – Gives you a bonus explosion that deals extra damage.
- Volley Fire – Increases your gun’s firing rate.
In order to equip a weapon, just press the “X” button located at the lower right side of your screen. When you’re done, you can swap between weapons by tapping the “Y” button located at the upper left side of your screen.
You can collect loot from dead bodies, chests and crates in both Creative and Survival Modes. In Survival Mode, loot is generated every few minutes, whereas in Creative Mode, you have to wait until you complete a specific task.
In addition to loot, you can also buy cosmetic items with real money, which can be purchased via the in-game store. All items cost $0.99. If you’re interested in upgrading to premium status, you’ll need to pay $9.99 per month or $79.99 annually.
