What is vaping?

What is an E-Cigarette?

These are nicotine vapourising devices that have been designed to be used with a flavoured solution with a nicotine content to give smokers the experience of having a cigarette without all the harmful chemicals found in regular cigarettes.

These are commonly known as a PV (personal vapouriser).

They are a battery powered device that utilises an atomiser (heating device) that turns the liquid into a vapour that is inhaled and exhaled like a regular cigarette.

There is not sufficient evidence as to whether inhaling these products is either healthy or unhealthy. Clinical trials have not as yet been conducted over a period of time as these products are relatively new, so as an added precaution, it would be advisable to choose an E-Liquid that is UK manufactured.

There is no medical advice that nicotine in itself is any more harmful than caffeine, but it is addictive and in high concentrations is a poison.

Therefore, if you accidentally swallow it, seek medical advice. If you are prone to allergies ask your doctor’s advice before using a personal vapouriser.

What is an E-Liquid?

This is also referred to as E-Juice and is the solution that is vapourised in a cartridge or tank.

It is based on either propelyne glycerol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG) or a mixture of both. The liquid is flavoured with a concentrate and a percentage of nicotine, ranging from 0% to 3.5%.

A 1.5% e liquid contains 15mg nicotine per ml of solution.

If you are choosing a PV to help you stop smoking altogether, we have found it better if you choose an e-juice that is not tobacco flavoured and to try something that tastes great whilst giving the nicotine receptors in your brain the stimulant they are looking for. If you then cave in and have a cigarette it will probably taste foul and you are more likely to keep off them in the future.

Choose a liquid that is around 15mg to 20mg strength and over the next few months gradually reduce the level until you are vaping with a 0% nicotine level. Once you have achieved this you will find you are hardly using your vapouriser at all.

If you enjoy smoking and are just considering switching to vaping instead because of the health issues related to cigarettes and the financial gain, then try a tobacco flavour that is similar to your brand of cigarettes or try one with a hint of cooling menthol. If your vapouriser tastes similar to your regular cigarettes you are more likely to use it and not reach for the cigarettes.

We do advise that you use your vapouriser as if you are having a cigarette and to put it down in between use. If not, you are likely to find yourself permanently with it in your hand and constantly vaping.

We do not encourage non smokers to take up vaping and would always recommend that stopping smoking altogether is a far better option for you. The NHS offers lots of support, help and advice.
