You’re at a party with your friends and you want to send a message anonymously. What could be easier than texting someone’s phone number? But, if they look down at their screen to see the text, then they can figure out who you are. With just a few simple tricks, you can send a secure text message that no one will ever know was sent from your phone. 

The first thing we need is a little privacy note. You’ll have to do this before sending the text to your recipient. Here’s how: 

Open up any app on your iPhone or Android device (we used WhatsApp). 

Tap on Settings (at the top of the app) and scroll down until you find Privacy &; Security. Tap the toggle switch so it turns green and reads On. This tells the app you don’t want anyone to know what you’re doing with it. 

On your iPhone, open Messages. Scroll through the list of contacts until you get to the person you want to send the anonymous text to, tap on their name, and then tap on their picture in the upper right corner. 

Now tap on their name again and make sure the checkbox next to Send Anonymous Notifications is checked. If it isn’t checked, uncheck it and hit Done to save your changes. 

Open your text messaging app (our example was WhatsApp) on your smartphone. 

Go to the menu bar by tapping the three dots in the far right-hand corner and choosing More Actions > Options. 

In the new window, tap on Privacy and choose the option labeled Hide My Info and Message History. 

Next, tap on Clear All Data for Everyone to delete all of your messages, including those that include your contact information. 

If you want to hide the fact that you’ve sent this message, tap on Clear All Data for Everyone and then tap on Hide This Conversation. It is highly recommended that you use this option because if you don’t, your recipient might be able to tell that you’ve been messing around with their phone. 

Now, back at your app, go into your saved contacts and select the person you want to send the secret message. 

Before you send the message, tap on the Send button to bring up the keyboard. Tap the X button in the upper left corner of the keyboard or click on the red circle to clear the text field. 

Type your message and when you’re done, tap on the Send button. The recipient will receive the message immediately and won’t know who sent it. 

If you want to track down the sender later, you can go back into your contacts and view each conversation. Go to the last tab under the header My Conversations and you should be able to see the text message you sent. Now you can follow the steps above to send another anonymous text message. 

It’s important to remember that there is always a chance that the person you are talking to may still somehow be able to figure out who you are. There are also ways to spoof your identity using different apps, like iMessage, Facebook Messenger, etc., but these are more complex methods compared to the method described above.
